Genetics
Is Hindu Kush indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree
Hindu Kush is a pure indica with no named parents: it is a landrace, a population shaped over generations by the mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan.1,2,3 Seed companies say their lines were selected from that stock, and in state lab records named variants and crosses far outnumber plain Hindu Kush.4,5,6

A landrace, not a cross
A landrace is one of the original cannabis populations, usually named after the place it developed; generations of local growing give it traits Leafly calls terroir. Indica landraces were isolated in the arid mountains around Afghanistan and Pakistan and are known for broad leaves, short stature, dense flowers and the hash made from them.3
Hindu Kush takes its name from that terrain: an 800 km (500 mi) range west of the Himalayas that runs from central and eastern Afghanistan into northwestern Pakistan and far southeastern Tajikistan.1,14
How indica is it?
Fully, by every strain database and breeder description we checked: Leafly calls it a pure indica, AllBud 100% pure indica, Weedmaps a pure indica landrace, Sensi Seeds 100% indica and Seedsman a pure indica land-race. A 2015 review in Neurotherapeutics also lists Hindu Kush among pure Cannabis indica strains.1,5,15,16,17,18
The only exceptions are seed listings. Barney’s Farm’s spec sheet says "Indica +90%" even though its description calls the strain 100% indica, and a US retailer lists the same Barney’s seeds as 80% indica.19,20
The mountain population versus today’s seed lines
The seeds on sale are not the wild population. Sensi Seeds says it has held its Hindu Kush genetics since the 1980s and has never hybridized them, inbreeding and selecting within the line for generations to get uniform plants; Seedsman says its regular Hindu Kush has likewise been inbred for many generations since reaching the West.4,5 Barney’s Farm sells only a feminized version, which it says preserves the landrace line.19
SeedFinder lists 16 different breeders’ versions under the name, so two packets of "Hindu Kush" seeds can be different selections.21 Leafly calls landrace strains sold today heirloom strains: they carry landrace genetics but lack the original terroir.3 High Times wrote in 2014 that the flowers themselves had become rare.22
What our lab data adds
In state lab records, named variants and crosses far outnumber plain Hindu Kush. Our strict name matching found only 17 flower tests of plain Hindu Kush, against 217 results across all product types (93 of them flower) tested under near-miss names, led by "Purple Hindu Kush" (106 results) and "Red Hindu Kush" (27), plus crosses such as "Hindu Kush × Plushberry".6 Leafly lists Purple Hindu Kush as Hindu Kush × Purple Afghani, the same parents it gives Purple Kush.8,9
Disputed: is it a parent of OG Kush?
Hindu Kush is often named as a parent of OG Kush, but even Leafly gives two different answers.
